Hills like White Elephants

I do not often step out of my realm of acting to partake in public blogs, but recently I enrolled in a local E.S.S.P (English Short Story Program) and I'm required to convey my feelings on the short stories that we have read, to people I know and or feel will give me a valid response to my opinions as well as to aid in the understanding and meaning of the short stories, while gathering others ideas and thoughts on the subject of the story.

Upon reading the short story of "Hills like White Elephants" I thought the story was quite perplexing and left you wondering what in the devil is going on. After having a little discussion with our group we concluded that the story was about a young American couple that are tossing back and forth the heavy and hard decision weather to have an abortion. One in our group had said that the s.s (short story) was about a young women who was not feeling the love from her lover and wanted to make him happy and their discussion was on the subject of breast implants. This did give us all quite a laugh and to each his own, but all joking aside this s.s plays on some very pressing matters that many people today face.

I agree with the first mentioned. I think that this story is most likely about the tough decision of abortion, and not that of breast implants, sorry Em. This story shows many different kinds of symbolism such as how the life of those two Americans is on the boarder of choosing one life that looks much like a waste land and would bare no fun, lush and plentiful fruit, or they could chose the track that takes them to a place were they can have all the fun they want together, with out the complications of a child getting in the way. In the end of the story the young couple chose, it is implied but its all up to the reader, that they are going to get ride of the child and live a life of fun and excitement for now.
